The Redbull Thre3style DJ competition is the world's biggest competition for DJs. Participating DJs must play a 15 minute set that must incorporate three different styles of music. It doesn’t matter what styles, whether its hip-hop, electro, funk, house or country, so long as they turn the party out. Judges, experts in the field of DJing and rocking parties, evaluate each set according to a number of criteria including track selection, creativity, skills, stage presence and audience response. And while technical ability is very important, a DJ has to get the dance-floor rollin. This year, national champions from 20 countries from around the world will come together at the end of the year for the international final in Baku, Azerbaijan.
This year's judges included local faves Smalltown DJs, Hedspin (2011 world champ), Four Color Zack (2012 world champ) and Canada's favourite ginger, Skratch Bastid. The co-host for the event at Commonwealth Bar & Stage, was TO's DJ Flipout.
Charly Hustle aka. Sean Grant from Saskatoon started the night out with an incredibly creative set, mashing multi genres and classic jams. He eventually would place 2nd on the night. Local vet and fan fave Ivan Rankic brought his usual heat and was a standout amongst the contestants. Ivan's partner in crime DJ Heebz brought an incredible set for his army of fans that awarded him a third place finish. When Beat Drop's head DJ Instructor Rick Cruz aka DJ C-Sik opened his set he had the room in the palm of his hands within 10 seconds. C-Sik played a recording of his mother introducing C-Sik and explaining why he was the best DJ. C-Sik then went on to showcase his strength. It's what set him apart from all the competitors, not only his flow and ability to rock the crowd, but his scratching and turntablism abilities. C-Sik incorporated all the elements he felt he lacked in his last year's set by adding some pad and tone play elements, then added his style and flow that enabled him to take home first place on the night. What made his set extra special is that Rick has been practicing and preparing for this comp while being increbily busy here at Beat Drop and with his regular gigs around the city. From playing the Coke stage at the Calgary Stampede two times a day to instructing and teaching at our Summer Teen DJ camps every day, Rick has had to miss out on alot to prepare for this event. We know however Rick would not trade with anyone in the world. Rick truly loves being a DJ and getting to spread his love to others is a great passion of his.
Charly Hustle, Heebz and C-Sik will now go on to Vancouver this Saturday July 26th in Vancouver BC and compete for the Canadian National Finals against DJ D-Smooth, DJ Tom Fleming, and PLAEBOI from the East as well as returning National Champion and all around amazing dude Adam Doubleyou.
